Assignment 4: Composition

This assignment is to use what we have learned about line, tone, shape and colour to create a poster for a musical event. It’s our choice as to what genre or style of music/event we use, but we need to bear in mind who the poster is for, and style it accordingly. The assignment notes also talk about visual hierarchies, which I found really helpful. I think that, in my previous posters, I didn’t simplify enough and it wasn’t very clear what the focus of each poster was. I’ve mulled over my feedback from that assignment and I want to create something much more simple and using the idea of visual hierarchies to determine which part of an image is most important, and which parts less so. We are also to consider the relationship between musical style and image.

I began, as I so often do, with the dictionary and thesaurus. First I looked at the dictionary.

I highlighted the definitions that interested me most. I then went on to wander around in the thesaurus. First I looked at synonyms for music and composition, again highlighting the words I was most interested in.

I continued to prowl through several more words in this way, such as din, sound, stomp, symphony, voice, instrument, song, chorus, carol; but, while these added layers of meaning, I found that I was circling around a cluster of common words which eventually led me back to synonyms for music.

After this I set all these words aside and made a mind map with the words that remained in my mind, and that led to further ideas.

From this I was most inspired by the ideas of a dawn chorus walk and a Christmas carol singing event. I decided first to look at the dawn chorus walk  I have missed a couple of opportunities to go in one of these, and as I listened to the dawn chorus as I awoke that morning, the seed of the idea came to me.

I looked at some examples of adverts for such walks and found the following:

www.warleywoods.co.Uk

www.museums and galleries.Leeds.gov.Uk

I didn’t find any of these very inspiring. I think the most engaging image is the Warley Woods one, with the dawn light and the bird centre stage.I’m not sure about the composition though, perhaps the bird should have been further to the right, or better still, facing right. In the Leeds image the silhouetted bird looks like it’s isolated from any other bird life. The National Trust don’t use an image at all. I was a bit apprehensive about checking out the competition, but I feel reassured that I could produce something here.

The next day I was up at the crack of dawn and over to the park to take dawn photos. I wanted to go in the woodland part of the park and record the colours of the sky and landscape at this time of day, when the sun was just rising. Here are a selection of my photos.

The woodland section was locked, so I tried to find other places with a number of trees. I got a bit worried about all those branches - how would I portray those? Also, these photos were taken in March, and I know that things will look more springlike in the coming weeks, and that the light will change  Dawn chorus walks tend to take place in early May. I felt a bit discouraged, and I spent a bit of time looking at decorative paper and fabric which portray tree branches  I found some, but they didn’t really help.

Feeling discouraged, I decided to have a look at the carol singing event. Before lockdown I participated in a carol singing event at Mousehole Forge, a local privately owned historical house and anvil. I thought about designing a poster for that event. I considered walking over there early to take photos, but again ran into the problem that we’re in March, not December. I looked a bit at images online

I also considered a Christmas card image that I drew a couple of years ago.

I like this drawing, but I wanted adults as well as children in it, and I also felt to rework a finished image might make it lose some vitality or unbalance the image. Of course, I could start again and draw a new set of carollers, but I was still puzzling over the Mousehole Forge end of things. How could I include both without the image getting complicated? I decided to sleep on it.
