Project 5: Photography I Space Exercise 7: Viewpoint
For this exercise we look again at zoom. The task was to set the camera on aperture priority and take a tightly framed portrait at maximum zoom, then to walk towards the subject until the same portrait could be taken with the lowest focal length. Then to compare the two photos.
Here are my photos:
In the first photo I had my lens at 45mm, and in the second photo it was at 15mm, and I had moved forward to maintain proportions. The most obvious difference between the two images is that the photo taken without zoom has a lot more background elements. Again, as with the photos in the previous exercise, the zoom has flattened the depth of field. The bin that is clearly visible in the second photo doesn’t feature in the first photo at all. I think the zoom has also made my friend appear to be a bit wider. In our culture that wouldn’t be a popular outcome. There are also a lot more houses showing in the second image. The blurred background is more evident in the first image.
