Project 7: Visual Experimentation. Research Task: Collage

The task here is to research the collage art of:

  • Max Ernst
  • Hannah Hoch
  • John Heartfield
  • Linder Sterling
  • John Stezaker
  • Julie Cockburn
  • Eugenia Loli
  • Isabel Reitemeyer
  • Romare Bearden

and to select two of them and write 100 words on each of them. Collage has been a big part of my creative practice over the years so researching these artists has been interesting. Much could be said about all of them, but as I must choose only two, I chose the two which I found most appealing and which relate most to my own practice. These are Julie Cockburn and Eugenia Loli.

Julie Cockburn (born 1966)
Process: Gathering vintage portraits and scenes and embroidering/collating onto them, thus creating palimpsests which decontextualise the photos and create new imagined characters.
Image sources: Second hand shops, eBay
Collage method: Embroidering childlike stitches or collating bright, often geometric, forms onto vintage photographs
Why?: “Cockburn is fascinated by the disconnect between a photograph and its subject. Through her manipulated portraits, she attempts to undermine the old adage that the camera never lies.” {https://www.artsy.net/artist/julie-cockburn).
Relevance to my practice: Similar motivation to my Critical Review. Similar use of embroidery on paper. Inspiring integration of the two.

Eugenia Loli (born 1973)

Eugenia Loli, Desert Dessert, 2017 in Elizegi, R, “Collage by Women: 50 Essential Contemporary Artists”, pg 71 Hoskins, 2021.

Eugenia Loli,  Natural History Museum (2013) in Moore, A, The Collage Ideas Book , Ilex, 2018, pg 41.

Process: Digital collage

Image sources: 750 vintage magazines.

Collage method: “ I browse my pictures, until I find one I like. Then, I build on top of it.” Eugenia Loli, https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/wj5bg5/eugenia-lolis-psychedelic-collages-will-melt-your-mind

Why?: “It's important for me to say something with my artwork … Sometimes the narrative is witty or sarcastic, sometimes it's horrific … sometimes it's chill.” Eugenia Loli, https://cargocollective.com/eugenialoli/About-Eugenia-Loli

Relevance to my practice: “[Collage isn’t] like illustration where one can draw anything. If a particular image doesn’t exist, the collage doesn’t exist.” Eugenia Loli (Elizegi, R, 2021, pg 70). This challenges me to be more spontaneous in my art, beginning with what comes to hand rather than having an image all planned out before I begin.
